Jack Dodson Biography (1931-1994)



Full name, John S. Dodson; born May 16, 1931, in Pittsburgh, PA; died of heart failure following a long illness, September 16, 1994, in Los Angeles, CA. Actor. Dodson was perhaps best known for his portrayal of county clerk HowardSprague on The Andy Griffith Show and then on Mayberry R.F.D. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in 1953, Dodson began a career as a stage actor in New York City, where he appeared on Broadway in Our Town, You Can't Take It with You, and Hughie. Following his success on The Andy Griffith Show,Dodson guest starred on numerous television programs, including Cagney and Lacey, St. Elsewhere, Barney Miller, Hawaii Five-O, Welcome Back, Kotter, Newhart, Matlock, and L.A. Law. Dodson also portrayed Mickey Malph, father of Ralph Malph, in several episodes of Happy Days, and often appeared as a radio station manager on Homefront. Dodson's film credits include appearances as Norman Gresham in Angel in My Pocket, Harold Clinton in The Getaway, and Llewellyn Howland in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
