George Murcell Biography (1925-1998)

George Murcell enjoyed a long stage career whichincluded work with such leaders as Tyrone Guthrie and Peter Brook. Murcell was also an accomplished musician and linguist. He entertained early in his life by singing and playing musical instruments. After studying acting he took anumber of stage roles in Britain including many of the English classics andplays such as The Dark is Light Enough and The Lark. After working with Tyrone Guthrie in Tamborlaine, Murcell received more exposureand he appeared in The Threepenny Opera. He acted with Rex Harrison in Planatov by Chekhov. He was active in the Royal Shakespeare Companyand played a number of roles in the repertoire. In the 1970s Murcell focusedmuch of his attention on opening his own Elizabethan Playhouse in London.
