Margaux Hemingway Biography (1955-1996)



Born Margot Hemingway, February 1, 1955, in Portland, OR; died July 3, 1996,in Santa Monica, CA. Actress, model. Hemingway achieved celebrity as a model,appearing on the covers of magazines such as Vogue, and for securing a record $1 million contract for becoming the spokesperson for Faberge's Babe fragrance in the 1970s. On the heels of her modeling success, she turned to actingand appeared in the 1976 film Lipstick, which centered on a young woman's revenge murder of the man who raped her. She starred in the movie with her younger sister, Mariel, playing a minor role. Although the movie was criticized byreviewers, Hemingway was presented with a citizenship award by the California Bar Association. Due to the awareness brought to the subject of rape by themovie, the California Legislature passed the Margaux Hemingway Resolution No. 109. The law states that a rape victim's sexual history can not be discussed during a trial. Hemingway also appeared in movies such as They Call Me Bruce?, Inner Sanctum, and Deadly Rivals. She also made a documentary about her grandfather, legendary author and sportsman Ernest Hemingway, and worked on Hemingway's Adventure: Fly Fishing in South America for television. Hemingway admitted to problems with alcohol, bulimia, and epilepsy. After treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic in 1988, she attempted a comeback in 1990 by posing nudefor Playboy.
