Career: Screenwriter, executive story editor, producer, and playwright. University of California,Santa Barbara, Regents Lecturer, 1982, and visiting assistant professor of writing, 1987 and 1988. Military service: United States Merchant Marines, 1943; United States Navy, 1945-46. Member: Writers Guild of AmericaWest. Awards, Honors: Academy Award nomination, best original screenplay, 1942, for Tom, Dick and Harry; Grand Prize, Karlovy Vary Film Festival and Grand Prize, Academie du Cinema de Paris, both 1955, for Salt ofthe Earth; Lt. Robert Meltzer Award (awarded posthumously), Writers Guild of America, 1999.
