Anton Furst Biography (c. 1944-1991)



Full name, Anthony Francis Furst; born c. 1944; committed suicide, November 24, 1991, in Los Angeles, CA. Special effects designer. Furst founded the London-based special effects firm, Holoco, which designed and staged holograph shows including "The Light Fantastic," for a tour of the rock group The Who. Furst was one of the leaders in the introduction of laser special effects to motion pictures and his firm, Holoco, went on to design effects for such filmsas Star Wars, Alien, Superman, Outland, and Moonraker. Broadening his expertise to include production design, Furst served as art director for the films Full Metal Jacket, The Company of Wolves, Awakenings, andBatman, the latter for which he received an Academy Award in 1990 with associate set-decorator, Peter Young. Furst also employed his creative talents outside the film industry with the design of the New York restaurant Planet Hollywood.
